Completed 2024 Games Convention Interactive Immersive Experience Client: Phygital
This kind of project is right up my street; receiving super cool static assets with the aim of turning them into a super cool animation. I’d never played Diablo, so my first move was to do a deep dive into the lore, scroll through the wiki to get my bearings on who this girl and wolf character were, and listening to Diablo’s hefty musical scores for maximum immersion.
The need to have lightning effects in these assets was also an excellent challenge; I had to find a way of adding the illusion of depth and somewhat dynamic lighting to 2D images. And the great thing about developing these techniques, was that I was then able to employ a similar approach when it came to creating a large number of lightning VFX shots for Bananacide.
The interactivity element of this project went like this; users could come up and push a button, triggering a wolf apparition. This meant that not only would we need the wolf apparition sequence, but we’d also need an ‘idle loop’ of the girl, as she waits for someone to kindly push the button in front of her. The genius team at Phygital would then set everything up on site so that the correct bit of video plays at the correct time – I just wish I had managed to get down to Cologne to stand next to it and whenever someone pressed the button I could have said “I animated that”.
