I’ve always been aware of the world of 40k – I can still remember having a play date back in primary school where my friend set all his figurines up on the carpet. I wanted to play with them and have them smash into each other, but he spent the whole time measuring distances between them and letting me know that my guys had all died because they were in range of his flame thrower. I didn’t really revisit Warhammer again.

Until Speed Freeks came my way.

I was drafted in to start playing the game during it’s early access phase – and start ideating and creating social assets as I went. It’s a great game – I was a big fan of car combat games Cel Damage and Twisted Metal back in the day, and Speed Freeks has build on many of the elements that made those games so much fun.

This was the first social content creation project in which I was able capture the base material before editing it – normally social content is derived off of source material like a TV show or film – so in this case it was fantastic fun being able to think up content from scratch and then diving into the game to try and record the shots I needed.

Video game capture really gets my filmmaking juices flowing again; designing shots and preparing to shoot on location uses many of the same skills needed for capturing stuff in-game. The only problem with having so much fun in this project was that it kept me away from the editing of Bananacide!

Alongside game capture, this project also allowed me to dive back into one of my favourite things to do: designing a graphics package. Speed Freeks had supplied some keyart and a few modular metallic elements like border and backers – so it was good fun to take some time to explore the game’s visual style so that I could build upon it.
